In explaining how your ideas of personal transformation have been aided or challenged by two different texts in this course, you must write about two texts written from different perspectives, and one text should be a modern For example, if you use one of Plato’s texts, be sure that you choose something modern (and, of course not Plato) for the second text. If you use Genesis from the Hebrew Bible as your first text, you should not choose Exodus (also from the Hebrew Bible and also not modern) as the second text. If you choose a text from the Gospels or Thomas Merton as your first text, do not choose a text from the Christian perspective as your second text, and so on. When engaging with the two course readings, be sure to avoid writing a simple compare/contrast essay. You will want to focus on integrating the ideas into a coherent essay in response to the prompt. (“Integrating” means getting the two sources talking to each other.) I recommend beginning with a thesis that articulates the point you want to make in your essay. (This helps bring good organization to your thoughts.) Then in the following paragraphs use the two sources to support your argument. You can choose any of the texts we read this semester except those by Catherine Price, The Truman Show, Pico Iyer, Ruben Habito, David Brooks, and Douglas Christie. You cannot write about the Allegory of the Cave. Do not use quotations. See syllabus p.14 #17. No use of generative artificial intelligence, including Grammarly and similar tools, is allowed on this final exam. Any detection of AI use will result in failure for the exam.
