CASE STUDY 2: Yоu аre а CYC prаctitiоner in an after-schоol program.  Today is a typically chaotic day where children are coming and going at various times.  You notice 10-year-old Matt working on a model airplane.  Responding to the puzzled look on his face you move over to stand behind him.  You ask him how the project is going and he responds, “Where does this piece go?  It won’t fit into any of the holes left over!”  You pick up the instructions and help Matt find the drawing that describes the parts that he is working on.  When Matt says, “Oh now I get it,” you move on. You notice Octoria standing on the outside of a circle of children playing a ball game.  She is pushing one of the players and attempting to grab the ball when it passes by her friend in the group.  You make eye contact and shake your head slightly.  She responds by breaking eye contact and continuing with her previous behavior.  You walk over to where she is and stand next to her.  She discontinues trying to catch the ball and then attempts to get her friend’s attention.  You suggest she might enjoy either joining the game with her friend or finding a different group to join.  Several of the other girls in the group say in unison, “Octoria is just trying to keep us from having fun. Make her go away!”  You respond, “Maybe what Octoria really wants is to join the game?”
