PART II – Essаy *Pleаse chооse ONE оf the following questions аnd provide a detailed response incorporating themes and events from lecture, as well as the primary documents from your readings. Also, be sure to identify and answer all parts of the question in order to receive full credit.   1.) Despite the common misconception that the Americas were sparsely populated by primitive peoples, which seems to help justify colonization, some of the most striking features of native societies at the time of contact with Europeans were their size, complexity, and diversity. Knowing what we learned about the pre-Columbian peoples of North and South America Provide several examples from your readings and lecture that highlight the many diverse and advanced civilizations that occupied the “New World” prior to and during the early stages of European colonization. What does this show us about pre-Colombian life in the Americas and how does this change after 1500? Finally, what are some of the factors that lead to this change? Be sure to support your argument with several relevant key terms and examples from lecture as well as your readings that we've covered throughout Unit 1.   2.) While most tend to believe that many of the foundational tenants that make up the American identity come from just one group of English colonists settling along the Atlantic coast, we've seen how it was actually many early settlements, made up of various peoples with a wide range of corresponding and conflicting ideas. Briefly compare and contrast the early regions of settlement in British North America that we've discussed at length in class, highlighting the origins of the colony, some of the unique difficulties and successes in establishing it, as well as their values, religion, economics, government, social structure, and labor base. How did the colony get along with others around them and finally, what did each of these early settlements ultimately contribute to our collective national identity and founding story? Be sure to support your argument with several relevant key terms and examples from lecture as well as your readings that we've covered throughout Unit 1.   3.) Although originally reliant on communal labor or indentured servitude, the English colonies in mainland North America, became increasingly dependent on imported slaves from West Africa to work an ever-growing network of small farms and plantations. According to your readings and from what we’ve seen in lecture, what factors were ultimately responsible for this key shift in economic development?  How did the colonies seek to expand and regulate things once this major shift occurred and what challenges to this new system arose? Be sure to support your argument with several relevant key terms and examples from lecture as well as your readings that we've covered throughout Unit 1.   4.) In the wake of the French and Indian War, American colonists began drifting further away from their fellow countrymen back in England. This rift hastened over the next two decades and ultimately lead to open hostilities between the two sides in the 1770s. Briefly retrace the events that led to this fracture by highlighting the major ideas, issues and events, that led American colonists to take-up arms in open rebellion against the strongest military power on the globe during the late 18th century. Be sure to support your argument with several relevant key terms and examples from lecture as well as your readings that we've covered throughout Unit 1.
