Pаrt II: Shоrt Essаy (3 аt 20 pоints each-->60 pоints)Discuss 3 of the following 5 questions in short essays of approximately 3-4 paragraphs each. (This is not a formal essay—no intro, conclusion or thesis. Just answer the question.) Try to refer specifically to the Bible in your answer. Why was the controversy around having kings? What characterized the ideal prophet/king relationship, and how did that relationship deteriorate? Identify the high and low-points of the prophet/king relationship. What (according to the narrator) constitutes a good king or a bad king? Give specific examples of each. Why doesn’t the Wilderness generation get to enter the Promised Land? Who are the exceptions? Be sure to include a discussion of why Moses and Aaron don’t get to enter the Land.  How do you know a character in the Pentateuch is going to be a hero? What are a hero’s defining characteristics? What type-scenes are connected with these heroes? What continuities exist between the Pentateuch and the books of the Prophets we’ve studied so far (Joshua through Kings) in terms of motifs, characterization, and emphasis? What techniques constitute carryovers and what is new in the books of the Prophets? What is the literary function of repetition in the Bible? Be sure to identify several different forms of repetition and to discuss their significance.
