No entanto, há ainda relativamente pouco tempo a situação era muito diferente. Independente desde 1822, o Brasil tornou-se república em 1889. Nas décadas seguintes, o país passou por períodos de maior e menor abertura democrática (a “República Velha”, de 1889 a 1930, o autoritário “Estado Novo” de Getúlio Vargas, de 1930 a 1945, o segundo período democrático de, 1945 a 1964). Em 1964, um golpe de Estado instaurou a ditadura militar, que se caracterizou pela limitação de direitos constitucionais, repressão às forças de oposição ao regime e a imposição da censura. A redemocratização do país foi um processo gradual que começou nos anos setenta, culminando em 1985 com a eleição do primeiro presidente civil desde o golpe, a Constituição de 1988 e as primeiras eleições presidenciais diretas em 1989. A Constituição de 1988 define o Brasil como uma república federativa presidencialista, com o Poder Executivo exercido pelo presidente eleito de quatro em quatro anos; o Poder Legislativo nas mãos do Congresso Nacional (composto pela Câmara dos Deputados e pelo Senado Federal); e o Poder Judiciário encabeçado pelo Supremo Tribunal Federal. Nos últimos cem anos, depois da instauração da república em 1910, Portugal também sofreu um longo período de governo antidemocrático.
