In 622, Muhammad entered the temple and destroyed its idols; in response, the populace of this city forced him to flee in an event known as the Hijra. When he won the civil war in 630, he returned and rededicated the temple to Islam and the site became the most holy Islamic site. Devout Muslims have since taken a pilgrimage, called the Hajj, to visit the site at least once in their lives.
