PROMPT: Cоnsider the rhetоricаl situаtiоn, including the аrtist's purpose and intended audience. Analyze how the ad uses rhetorical devices such as composition, color schemes, and imagery  to appeal to viewers' sense of emotion and logic to convey its message and achieve its purpose. Write a strong thesis for this prompt. Use the template below as a guide. This will become the thesis for your RA essay.  Template: In [type of text], [creator] uses [rhetorical strategy 1], [rhetorical strategy 2], and [rhetorical strategy 3] to [achieve purpose] and [persuade audience to think/feel/do what]. Review: What Makes a Good Rhetorical Analysis Thesis?  A rhetorical analysis thesis statement has three key components: WHAT is being analyzed (the text/image)  HOW the creator persuades (specific rhetorical strategies/devices)  WHY—the creator's PURPOSE (what they want viewers to think/feel/do) Example Thesis Statements: WEAK Thesis (too vague): This image uses many techniques to show that social media is bad. Problems: What techniques? How does it show this? What's the specific argument? BETTER Thesis (more specific): This image uses symbolism and color to argue that social media is addictive. Problems: What specific symbolism? What colors and why? What should viewers do with this information? Guided Thesis Development  Step 1: Identify the main argument/purpose: What is this image arguing? What’s its message? Step 2: Identify 2-3 specific rhetorical strategies: What strategies does it use?  Step 3: Identify the appeals used: Does it appeal to viewers’ sense of pathos, logos, ethos—or a combination? Step 4: Put it together for a strong thesis SAMPLE-- THIS IS ON ANOTHER IMAGE FOUND IN A PRIOR LESSON: Through powerful visual metaphors, strategic color contrasts, and symbolic imagery, the creator of this social media addiction image appeals to viewers' emotions and logic to argue that social media addiction is a serious problem that traps users like prisoners and requires greater awareness. Why it's strong: Identifies WHAT: "this image" Identifies HOW: "visual metaphors, dark color schemes, symbolic imagery" Identifies appeals: "emotions and logic" Identifies PURPOSE: "argue that social media addiction is a serious problem" Identifies desired effect: "requires awareness and action" Another SAMPLE  of a strong thesis: By using visual metaphors of chains and imprisonment, dark color psychology, and symbolic imagery of corporate control, this image effectively persuades viewers through emotional and logical appeals that social media addiction is a dangerous form of digital captivity that people must recognize and resist. Be sure you write a thesis on the prompt/image presented above.
