While the Wооdstоck Music Festivаl in April of 1969 represented the idyll of sixties youth culture, peаce аnd love, another rock festival in December of that year, [BLANK-1] revealed its dark side: drugs, anger, violence, and death. Billed as “Woodstock West,” it was an unmitigated disaster. It attracted 300,000 concert-goers but had poor security, inadequate sanitation, a horrible sound system, and tainted drugs. To save money, the event organizers had paid the infamous Hells Angels motorcycle gang $500 and free beer to be the event security. The gang, already high and drunk, armed themselves with sawed off pool cues and regularly beat concertgoers that got too close to the stage. The Grateful Dead refused to come on stage and the Rolling Stones had to stop their set to calm the crowd. When an eighteen-year old man was beaten back by the Hells Angels, the young man (high on meth) charged the stage with a pistol and was stabbed to death by the biker gang; his body was trampled and the Rolling Stones continued their song. The bad vibes and violence of this event (held just a few days before the new decade) presaged the divisiveness, anxiety, and dissatisfaction that marked the 1970s, as well as the decline in the peace-and-love counterculture movement.

She tоok advantage of the new music-focused television channel, MTV, which targeted a youthful audience, to become the top-selling female musician of all time. For feminists and those on the left-wing of the political spectrum, her songs and provocative mode of dress represented a relaxing of censorship and restrictive expectations for women and their sexuality. For religious groups and those on the right wing, she represented a threat to traditionalism and the American family. They argued she was making music videos that corrupted young people with vulgar, hyper-sexualized, and anti-authoritarian messages. Her 1989 music video, “Like a Prayer,” particularly inspired the ire of Christians and conservatives alike, who protested it as sexually suggestive and blasphemous.
