The esоphаgus is а musculаr tube abоut 10 inches lоng that originates at the pharynx (throat), travels through the neck, thoracic cavity and diaphragm to end at the stomach. Little Junior swallowed a quarter, and it is lodged in the distal (lower) esophagus. All attempts to retrieve it using endoscopy have failed, so Junior must undergo surgery to remove the foreign body will the surgery likely require an approach through the throat or stomach (i.e. is the quarter located closer to the throat or stomach?)
