Questions

The figure belоw is frоm Vаndputte, et аl., Applied аnd Envirоnmental Microbiology, January 2010, Vol. 76: p. 243-253 (no need to look at the paper). They used Chromobacterium violaceum (A) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (B) to examine the effects of the leaf and bark extracts (extracted using DMSO) from a tree (Combretum albiflorum). All of the wells have acyl homoserine lactones added and each row has three wells with the same samples (triplicate). The blue color in A is due to production of violacein, a pigment. The red color in B is due to pyocyanin production, a substance that is toxic to eukaryotic cells. The *** indicates this bar is significantly different from the DMSO (solvent control) bar. Question: What kind of system seems to be regulating the production of these colored substances? How does this system work? Why would they measure not only the production of the colored substances but also bacterial growth? What statement can you make regarding this figure? (What can you say about the leaf and bark extracts and which you would most prefer for what and why?)
