Impоrtаnt Tips fоr Succeeding in BIOL 1001 (аnd cоllege!) BIOL 1001 is designed to help you build your knowledge аnd understanding of biology through incremental steps. The course design is based on the latest neurological and pedagogical research on how we learn. Take a minute to watch the following video on how we learn from one of the preeminent scholars, Dr. Barbara Oakley! Her advice on learning is one of the more important things you can do to help you in this course and in college in general: The course structure can be a bit overwhelming and seem like a lot of busy work, but following these simple tips can save time and significantly improve your exam scores. (Note: you can find these tips in the Syllabus if you want to revisit them) Use the Study Guide for each unit to structure your notes from the learning material. Don't write it down if it's not in the study guide! If it comes up later in the unit, you can always revisit it! Be strategic! Watch the videos with the intention of filling out the study guide. This may mean you skip ahead sometimes. That's OK, as you can always rewind. And if you don't see it in the videos, check the e-book! Be efficient! Set aside a specific time each week to complete the learning material. For example, set aside two 45-minute chunks of time, with a break in between. Call it a day if you don't get through all the material in that time. We will revisit the material throughout the unit, and you can always revisit it later. Take the Learning Quiz without notes! This is your first chance to assess your understanding. Note what subjects you struggled with on the quiz, and focus on those when they are discussed in the unit. Take it as many times as you want, but using it to assess what you understand and don't understand is more important than scoring 100%. Pay attention to the Essential Questions! They are called "essential" for a reason. They are designed to focus on the key concepts from each unit, not just memorizing them but applying them to new situations in case studies. More than anything, these questions reflect the type of questions you should expect on the exams. Pay attention to the feedback videos! The feedback videos are a guide for which concepts are the most important to understand for each unit. More importantly, they provide a structure for re-organizing your notes. Draw connections! Re-organize your notes to relate how the general concepts listed in the study guides are discussed in the quizzes and the EQs. The simple act of re-organizing information is a very powerful way of learning. Self-assess! The weekly assessment quizzes are designed to give you a final opportunity to test how well you understand the material. They effectively practice exams. You have two attempts per quiz. Take the first attempt without notes to see where you are and what you need to improve. In general Write things down manual Learn in small steps Don't cram Revisit the material, even if you think you understand it Challenge yourself by testing yourself Get your sleep! Exercise! e.g., talk a walk between study sessions.
