On March 4, 2018 Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were fоund comatose on a park bench in Salisbury, England, poisoned by an organophosphate nerve agent called Novichok. This toxin binds to the enzyme acetylcholinesterase to permanently inactivate it. Acetylcholinesterase normally inactivates acetylcholine by converting it into a molecule of acetate and a molecule of choline, neither of which effectively bind to acetylcholine receptors. At synapses where acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter, Novichok leads to an increased concentration of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft. Initially the abnormally high acetylcholine concentration activates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, but soon these high concentrations desensitize these receptors, keeping them in a closed state. Effects of organophosphate poisoning on the heart initially increase the heart rate (tachycardia) followed by a significantly depressed heart rate (bradycardia). In organophosphate poisoning, atropine is commonly administered as an antidote because it competes with acetylcholine binding to muscarinic receptors. You would expect atropine to offset bradycardia by reducing the effects of the high acetylcholine concentrations where:
(The pаssаge fоr questiоns 30-32 is the sаme.) Different types оf hemoglobin and a related molecule called myoglobin are iron-containing proteins that bind O2 with higher or lower affinities, depending on the protein’s function. Myoglobin is found in muscle and binds to O2 that has dissociated from hemoglobin in adult and fetal blood. It has the same dissociation O2 curve in all adult and fetal animals. In utero, the fetal hemoglobin accepts O2 from adult (maternal) hemoglobin in the placenta. Animals that are adapted to living at high altitudes such as llamas have hemoglobin whose O2 binding characteristics promote survival at high altitude where PO2 levels are much lower than at sea level. Below is a figure showing four O2 dissociation curves, one for myoglobin, one for llama hemoglobin, and one for human maternal hemoglobin, and human fetal hemoglobin. Assuming that curve “2” represents the oxygen dissociation curve for llama hemoglobin and that fetal hemoglobin has a higher affinity for O2, than maternal hemoglobin, answer the following question. You would expect human maternal hemoglobin to be represented by line:
