Reаding #3 INSTRUCTIONS: Reаd the pаssage. Match each paragraph with the mоst suitable heading. One heading is extra. A Change оf Mind [A] Alzheimer's is a seriоus neurodegenerative disease. This means that, over time, it worsens the health of a person's brain. As it currently stands, the disease has no cure. Sadly, because so little is known about its origins, scientists have also not been able to find a way to significantly slow the disease down.  [B] Once it has been confirmed that a person is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, they can still expect to live for up to 20 years. However, Alzheimer's can create many challenges for an individual, even at the early stages of the disease. As it transforms the brain, daily functions become increasingly difficult to perform. Memory loss, disorientation,1 and problems using language are common challenges. Because patients often feel like they are losing their independence, suffering from Alzheimer's can be an emotionally painful experience. [C] Despite this, doctors, support workers, and other Alzheimer's experts strongly encourage patients to find ways to live the fullest and most meaningful lives possible. This does not mean taking drastic steps to change one's life. Rather, they recommend that patients make small changes to their daily routines and responsibilities.  [D] The first important change is acknowledging that one's life will need to become more structured and scheduled, and slower-paced. Creating daily routines and following a planned schedule, for example, can help patients carry out their daily tasks with less difficulty. Furthermore, allowing more time for tasks that used to be done more quickly can lead to a far more enjoyable experience. Most importantly, patients can more fully appreciate their daily lives by not trying to prove to themselves that they can do as much as before. Doctors and care workers suggest there is nothing to prove. It is far more productive for Alzheimer's patients to focus on a few tasks that can be done well rather than to create stress for themselves with overwhelmingly busy schedules. [E] Alzheimer's patients can also improve their quality of life by keeping their bodies fit and their minds as sharp as possible. Doctors suggest that moderate exercise such as brisk2 walking, jogging, or tennis may help delay the gradual loss of cognitive ability. The reason for this is that brain cells benefit from the increased supply of blood and oxygen that exercise can provide. In terms of mental fitness, although doctors admit that the evidence is not conclusive, activities that stimulate the mind can potentially increase brain activity. As a result, patients are encouraged to start a new hobby or even take a class to acquire new skills. [F] Finally, the welfare of Alzheimer's patients can be improved with a change in mindset. In the modern world, we often define our success in life according to how independent we are. For those with Alzheimer's, however, it is important to remember that humans are fundamentally social beings. In other words, all of us need help from others, particularly at certain stages in our lives. Embracing the help of others when required is thus not shameful. In fact, it is embracing the essence3 of what we truly are. 1Disorientation refers to a state in which someone is confused about or does not know where they are, what is happening around them, where they should go, or what they should do. 2Doing something in a brisk manner is to do it quickly and with lots of energy. 3The essence of something is its most basic and important quality.
