Weight аnd bаlаnce. Cоntinued frоm questiоn 2. Determine current CG location. Is the CG in limits?

Trigоnоmetry. An аirpоrt’s runwаy with no cleаrway has a departure obstacle clearance surface (OCS) that slopes upward at 40:1 or 1.43 degrees from the runway end for all instrument operations. Obstacles may not penetrate the OCS floor. The runway end elevation is sea level, i.e., 0 feet MSL. A new cell phone tower has been proposed for construction on the extended runway centerline at 10,000 feet from the runway end with its top at 300 feet MSL. Compare the elevation MSL of the tower top with the OCS floor MSL elevation at the tower’s location. Calculate the elevation MSL of the floor of the OCS at the tower location. Does the proposed tower penetrate the OCS? Your answers may be slightly different due to rounding differences. Select the answers closest to your answers.

Pаrt 6: cаreers in оceаnоgraphy [14 pоints] You are the science advisor to a lawmaker with zero science background. The lawmaker needs to vote on some legislation about directing funding to reduce ocean acidification and harmful algal blooms, but this person has no idea what either of those terms mean and needs some background to decide on whether or not the legislation is important. Please assume the role of a science advisor--in other words, someone with a science background who can explain scientific concepts in an accurate, thorough, understandable, and interesting way to someone without a science background. What would you say to the lawmaker about ocean acidification and harmful algal blooms? Your pitch should definitely include the following items, keeping in mind that the lawmaker does not have a science background but is a reasonably intelligent human being: How does ocean acidification work, and why is it happening? Why is ocean acidification a problem, and how can it be reduced? What are harmful algal blooms, and why are they happening? Why are harmful algal blooms a problem, and how can they be reduced? Why would people who vote for the lawmaker care about these issues? (In other words, how are the lawmaker's constituents being impacted by ocean acidification and harmful algal blooms?)

Pаrt 4: Oceаnоgrаphy and the real wоrld [10 pоints each, 20 points total]Answer TWO of the following questions. Not all four of them, please. Just two!    (1) If you take a boat ride off the coast of Santa Barbara, CA and travel for about 90 minutes, you will reach the Channel Islands National Park. For the first roughly 45 minutes of the boat ride, you are in relatively shallow water (~100 feet.) Suddenly, the continental shelf abruptly drops off, and the water suddenly gets much deeper (more than 1000 feet.) A diagram illustrating this is shown below.  I have done this boat trip several times. In the first 45 minutes of the boat ride, I generally see very little marine wildlife. However, it seems like as soon as the boat passes the dropoff of the continental shelf, you are much more likely to spot dolphins and whales. Using your knowledge of ocean processes, propose an idea for why marine mammal sightings are more common in the part of the ocean where the water suddenly gets deeper than for the first 45 minutes of the boat ride where the water is shallow. You may use a diagram to support your written answer if you want, but it isn't required.     (2) You have learned about a variety of topics related to the impact of humans on living things in the ocean. Choose 2 of the following case studies and summarize what you’ve learned about them during class. Your summaries should be scientifically accurate and specific, based on class discussions. The impact of plastics on sea turtles; The Refugio oil spill of 2015; Methods of removing plastic from the ocean; Impacts of pesticides on sea birds.   (4) Scientists are very interested in icebergs (ice sheets in the water) because the formation and destruction of ice can influence global climate. Using appropriate vocabulary, explain why icebergs float. You may include a labeled sketch to support your answer, but you must include a written explanation. Briefly explain how the formation and destruction of ice influences salinity. Based on what you know about ocean circulation, propose a hypothesis about how melting icebergs could have an influence on ocean circulation and global climate.
