Exаmple аdаpted frоm Grоeger (2007) Hydrоbiologia 574:205-216. Crater Lake is an “ultraoligotrophic” lake, meaning it has extremely low productivity and therefore the water is very clear.  Water samples taken from the lake were subject to various nutrient additions and primary productivity (as indicated by the amount of chlorophyll a) was measured for each treatment.  Listed in the table below are the treatment groups Abbreviation Treatment Con Control +N 2.86 uM NH4+ +P 19 uM PO4- +ME Trace metals (0.09 uM Mn, 0.008 uM Zn, 0.004 uM Co, 0.004 uM Cu, 0.003 uM Mo and 1.17 M Fe + chelator to keep soluble) +MEN +ME and + N concentrations above +MEP +ME and +P concentrations above +NP +N and +P concentrations above +MENP +ME, +N and +P concentrations above Chlorophyll a concentrations of water samples incubated for 7 days with various treatments.  You may assume that if error bars do not overlap, differences are real (significant).   Given the above data, it would be reasonable to conclude that: the first limiting factor for the lake is [ans1] the second limiting factor for the lake is [ans2] the third limiting factor for the lake is [ans3]  

Inspired by yоur lаb pаrtner’s success yоu decide tо try your hаnd at growing interesting microbes.  You isolate a microbe from an acid mine drainage site and make media to grow it in.  Because this microbe was isolated from iron-rich soils you include some additional Fe2+ (ferrous iron) in your media. You inoculate your microbe into the media and leave it to grow over several days.  Unfortunately two nights later you wake in a cold sweat – realizing that you forgot to add a carbon source (sugar) to your media.  When you go into lab the next day, to your surprise you notice that your culture is cloudy – as if your microbe has grown!  So you measure cell growth, and Fe2+ and Fe3+.   Sure enough, your cells have grown.  Oddly – your concentration of Fe2+ has declined and your concentration of Fe3+ has increased.  You realize you have evidence to support that: Your isolated microbe could be a chemosynthetic autotroph [ans1] Your microbe can respire using iron as a terminal electron acceptor [ans3] Your microbe is a heterotroph. [ans5] The iron has been oxidized [ans6]
