Dоctоrаl Quаlifying Exаminatiоn Myrna Veguilla Figueroa U63578610 Ph.D. in Measurement and Research Fall 2023 Day 2 Please Answer All Questions As part of a large, multi-year grant, researchers at a large state university along with school district and community professionals (administrators, teachers, school psychologists, public health professionals, social workers, parent advocates, etc.) who are involved in preschool education have come together to initiate a program of research that has 2 broad goals: Goal 1: Explore racially disproportionate discipline in early childhood settings and the factors associated with racial inequities in disciplinary practices, and use the information from the exploratory phase of the research (Goal 1) to inform the development and/or refinement of practices, methods, approaches and/or strategies that could reduce racial inequities in disciplinary practices in preschool settings. Goal 2: Rigorously evaluate the practices, methods, approaches and/or strategies that have been developed based on the work related to Goal 1 to determine the impact of these approaches on the level of racial equity in disciplinary practices and proximal and distal outcomes for children. You have been hired as a consultant to work with this group of university researchers, school district, and community professionals to plan this multi-year research. As part of Goal 1 of this project, the group is particularly interested in identifying critical variables in this context (outcome variables, explanatory variables, mediators, moderators, etc.) and then identifying (or if necessary, developing) reliable, valid, and fair measurement tools to measure these critical variables. Tools such as the Behavior Incident Report System (BIRS) are being considered along with measures that are more technologically based (e.g., electronic observational systems, experience sampling, etc.). As a measurement consultant to this group of researchers and professionals, you have been asked to provide conceptual and technical guidance in the identification and/or development of methods to measure these critical variables. This group would also like to use the data from these methods to inform the development and evaluation of possible interventions or policies/practices to reduce racial inequities in disciplinary practices in preschool settings, and eventually for research and program evaluation purposes. Using the background knowledge on disproportionality in disciplinary practices that you discussed in your Day 1 responses, describe critical variables you have identified for the Goal 1 phase of the research program along with the type(s) of assessments (traditional and newer methods) you would recommend. Provide a rationale for your decision that considers the strengths and limitations of the various options. Note that these variables may be about the child, teacher, classroom context, and/or center, etc. Pick 1 of these critical variables and describe the process that you would use to develop your proposed measure(s). What evidence would you collect to show that the scores produced by the assessments are reliable? What evidence would you collect to show that the scores produced by the assessments provide valid interpretations (i.e., describe the nature of your validity argument)? How might dimensionality be examined and what implications might the results have for score interpretation and reporting? How should scores be reported and to whom? Since the researchers and professionals are interested in comparing scores from the measure(s) across different groups of children (e.g., Hispanic, African American), how would you address measurement invariance/differential item functioning. Indicate what grouping variables you would select and your rationale for selection. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various measurement invariance/DIF analysis approaches. How might technology play a role in the process of measuring and reporting the scores for the critical variables How would you respond to various groups who might raise questions about the potential negative effects or unintended consequences of assessing disproportionality in disciplinary practices and related variables.?
