Using Sаfety Dаtа Sheets   Nо matter what career path yоu chоose-- academia, industry, health—you will use chemicals or biological materials. Some of these will be benign with no known harmful effects, but others will be dangerous to work with if you are not careful.    For any material, you need to be properly informed about its properties, how to handle it safely, and what to do if you inhale fumes or spill a liquid on you.   Safety Data Sheets (SDS; formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets) exist for all materials and are available from chemical/biologic manufacturers. They are always shipped with the material, but they can also be obtained from the manufacturer websites.   This activity will show you what kind of information can be found in SDS and where to look to find it.

PART 2. Whаt Infоrmаtiоn cаn be Fоund in a Safety Data Sheet?   The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a government body that helps protect workers by setting standards for safe laboratory practices and dispensing safety-related information. On their website is document that describes how to read SDS. After reading the rest of this section, use the URL below to access this document and then answer the questions in Part 2:   https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA3514.pdf   SDS’s are divided into 16 sections. While this provides gives an exhaustive description of a chemical’s properties and potential hazards, it is not usually necessary to read all 16 sections to safely use a chemical. For every-day use, you will find that a handful of sections are more frequently useful.   Using the pdf document from the OSHA government website to answer general questions about where to find different kinds of information about chemicals.   Note: Be sure to type your answers only in the text box accompanying each question.
