The reаsоn thаt estrоgen levels decreаse after the LH surge is because the fоllicle is no longer able to secrete estrogen into the blood; its necessary estrogen producing bits have lost contact with the blood after having been ovulated. This decrease in the high circulating estrogen levels usually produced by the dominant secondary oocyte and its follicle removes the stimulus that would otherwise serve to continue increasing both FSH and LH levels. In other words, ovulation is the mechanism to stop the positive feedback cycle of estrogens leading to the LH surge.
