Fоur Pаrаgrаph Essay Instructiоns WRITING PROMPT The anchоr reading for this module is the satirical essay, “How to Write an A Paper,” by Koji Frahm. However, this essay does not use any sources, and you will not summarize, paraphrase, or quote from Frahm’s text. After having read Frahm’s satirical essay, “How to Write an A Paper” and the “Common Myths about Academic Writing” document, consider some of the beliefs you have held about essay writing. For this essay, you will reflect on your own experiences with writing in school. Many students come to college with certain myths or assumptions about writing that they believe are true. Some of these ideas might come from middle school or high school English classes, and others may come from habits they have picked up on their own. Sometimes these ideas are helpful, but often they limit you as a writer. In this first-person essay, you will write about two myths or assumptions you have had about academic writing that you hope to unlearn now that you are starting college. ESSAY WRITING INSTRUCTIONS: Successful essays will use the following model for structuring and developing the essay: Title: All essays require a title. The title should be engaging, brief, and specific to the essay’s content. Five Paragraph Essay is not an acceptable title because it tells the reader nothing about the essay’s purpose. Use proper MLA capitalization for titles (below); In MLA, capitalize the first word of the title and subtitle, the first word of the subtitle (if present) and the last word of the title. All other words should also be capitalized EXCEPT for prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, and articles, unless these exceptions constitute the first word of the title/subtitle, last word of the title. Introduction: (70-100 words: Usually about 3-5 sentences)   Start with your general feelings or past experiences with writing, especially with formal writing for classes. What are some helpful beliefs you acquired about writing? How did they help you? Transition to some beliefs you acquired about writing that were not helpful. End with a thesis sentence that clearly articulates the two myths you seek to abandon and why you want to do so. Example thesis: As I begin college, I realize that my writing will be clearer and stronger if I abandon the beliefs that I must always begin by writing the introduction paragraph and that using an inflated vocabulary makes my writing sound impressive. Body Paragraph 1 (100-150 words: Usually about 5-8 sentences): Focus on your first myth or belief. Identify it in the topic sentence. Explain how you learned this idea, how it shaped your writing, and why you are prepared to abandon it or replace it with another belief about the same idea. How will your writing change? How does rejecting the myth free you or help you? How will it make your writing stronger but more challenging? Example topic sentence: For years I believed that if my essays were longer than other students’ then they must be better, but now I realize that length is not a suitable measurement of quality. Body Paragraph 2 (100-150 words: Usually about 5-8 sentences): Focus on your second belief. Use the same pattern: Identify the belief in the topic sentence. Explain how you learned it, how it affected you, and why you want to let it go. Conclusion (70-100 words: Usually about 3-5 sentences): Restate your thesis in different words, briefly review the two beliefs you are rejecting, and end by analyzing the ways in which letting go of these assumptions can help you succeed as a college writer. What improvements do you expect to see now that you are moving on from these beliefs? FORMATTING/PROOFREADING: After submitting your work as an Honorlock quiz in Canvas, you may return to the quiz in Canvas (not Honorlock) to view what you wrote. Copy/paste your essay into a document. Then, format your work using MLA guidelines. The content of the essay must be identical to the work you wrote during the Honorlock session. The only exception is students are permitted to fix proofreading errors like spelling and punctuation. I will reject submissions that violate this policy.   Reminders: Late essays will be penalized in accordance with the late policy stated in the syllabus (10% per day). Failure to successfully submit an essay by the module deadline will result in an F grade in the class, as the syllabus states that all essays must be submitted successfully in order to pass the class.
