Zhu Xi’s philоsоphy shоuld/should not be understood аs а legitimаte continuation of Confucianism. Just to give you a degree of pause, before you dive in and start writing this up. I realize that Zhu Xi is presented in the book we’re reading as a “neo-Confucian.” That may seem to settle the issue for you. But the category of “neo-Confucianism” is western in origin. It connotes innovation, “neo” meaning new. But you’ve read enough of Chinese thought at this point to probably recognize that innovation or newness would not be looked upon positively in the Chinese milieu. Zhu’s teachings are known in China as Daoxue, which translates, more or less, as “the learning of the way.” Make of that what you will. It may be helpful in thinking about the thesis, to think about what Han Yu (he of the Memorial on the Bone of the Buddha and the fierce polemic against religious Daoism and Buddhism) would make of Zhu’s thought. For that matter, do you think Confucius, he who said in the Analects, 7.1 “I transmit but do not create,” would accept Zhu as his legitimate heir?
