Midterm Exаm: The "Summаry vs. Anаlysis" Challenge Gоal: Tо demоnstrate your ability to look "under the hood" of a story and explain how it works, rather than just retelling what happened. The Prompt: In Chapter 13, we learned that a Summary tells us what happened, while Analysis tells us why it matters and how the author built their message. For this midterm essay, choose one of the two texts provided below. Write a short analytical essay of 300 words that identifies one major theme or "assertion" the author makes about society (e.g., power, identity, or injustice). How does the author use a specific moment, character, or dialogue to prove this point? Option 1: "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah In this excerpt, Noah describes a harrowing night where he and his mother are threatened by a violent minibus driver. Excerpt: "I didn't fully comprehend the danger we were in at the moment; I was so tired that I just wanted to sleep. Plus, my mom stayed very calm. She didn't panic, so I didn't know to panic. She just kept trying to reason with him". Option 2: "Six Feet of the Country" by Nadine Gordimer This story explores the "feudal" relationship between white landowners and Black workers in apartheid-era South Africa. Excerpt: "I had the feeling that they were shocked, in a laconic fashion, by their own mistake, but that in the confusion of their anonymous dead they were helpless to put it right. They said to me, 'We are trying to find out... There are so many black faces - surely one will do?'". Requirements: The Assertion: Create a debatable thesis. Do not just state a fact; make a claim about the author's message. Analysis over Summary: Limit plot summary to 2–3 sentences. Spend the rest of your essay explaining how the author's word choice or perspective proves your assertion. Evidence: You must integrate at least one direct quote from your chosen excerpt into your body paragraph.
