As the Cаthоlic Church develоped mоre structure аnd trаdition by the fourth and fifth centuries, they developed Church Fathers (thinkers who contributed to the formation of and understanding of Christianity) and Dogma (established traditions considered divine law from which there is no scriptural basis). Church fathers were particularly concerned with sex, marriage, and virginity. One of these, St. Augustine of Hippo, laid out his thoughts on the matter in Confessions (ca. 400). He claimed that the act of sexual intercourse, which he called [BLANK-1], had tainted all of humanity – even those who were blameless or who were virgins themselves. He believed Jesus’s sacrifice and resurrection was what was necessary to absolve humanity from this taint.
