In Mаy оf this yeаr, the Anglо-Swiss cоmpаny Glencore PLC announced that it would pay at least $1.2 billion and plead guilty to bribery charges and conspiracy to violate U.S. anti-corruption laws.  The guilty pleas and fines are related to Glencore’s past commercial conduct in developing countries where it obtains minerals and other resources and trade them around the world.  The U.S. trading office of Glencore will pay $700 million to resolve a U.S. Justice Department foreign-bribery investigation for conduct in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Sudan and $40 million to settle bribery claims in Brazil. As part of its settlement of the U.S. investigations, Glencore pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.  The Brazil fine stems from Glencore’s participation in a corruption probe known as “Operation Car Wash”, which involved payments to officials at state-controlled Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobas).
