Interpreting Ecоnоmetric Output. Rаndоm Cut Deli Meаts, Inc. is а maker of deli-ready cold cuts based in Chicago, IL. They are in the middle of an effort to increase the sophistication of their pricing strategy, so have hired a bunch of sharp young managerial economics graduates (you) to help them evaluate both their base pricing and promotional strategies.  They have given you weekly price and volume scanner-data from 100 stores over a period of 104 weeks.  Suppose you have estimated a linear demand function in which weekly the weekly volume of one brand – Random Pieces of Ham – is a function of its own price (po), the major competitor’s price (pc), total category sales (y, as a proxy for total expenditure), a promotional variable (d, dummy variable that equals 1.0 when a retailer has temporarily reduced the price by 20.0% or more), and an interaction term between price and promotion designed to capture the “rotation” in the demand curve expected when a product goes on sale (pod).  Help Random out by answering the following questions based on the regression output in table 1.  (Note that price is measured in $/lb. and quantity in hundreds of pounds per week).   Table 1. Random Ham Sales Analysis Parameter Estimate t-ratio p-value Intercept 109.069 25.074 0.000 po -13.302 -24.061 0.000 pc -0.923 -8.454 0.000 d 77.817 5.078 0.000 pod -6.662 -3.364 0.000 y 0.015 57.073 0.000 R-squared 0.979     F 1,016.655     Carefully interpret two measures of “goodness of fit” of this equation.  Suggest one way in which the fit of this equation may be improved. Suppose the average price over all stores and week is $7.82 / lb and the average quantity is 22.38 lbs per week.  What is the price elasticity of demand?  Is this price too high, too low, or just right if the retailer is interested in maximizing revenue?  Justify your answer carefully for full marks. Are promotions effective in increasing Random Ham sales?  Does demand become more or less elastic during price-promotions?  Is this a good thing or bad thing from Random’s perspective?  Explain carefully. Is the competitor’s product a substitute or complement to Random Ham sales?  Justify based on your estimate of the cross-price elasticity (the competitor sells an average of 30 lbs per week at a price of $6.00 per lb) (100 Points)
