Atherоmа refers tо:

Yоur cоmpаny hаs develоped а microfluidic device to sort large and small cells. The device has two inlet channels (inlet 1 has a diameter of 300µm and delivers buffer fluid at 9.AB mL/min, and inlet 2 delivers your cell mixture (cells in buffer fluid) with a diameter of 400 µm and volumetric flow rate half that of inlet 1).   There are two outlet channels, one that delivers the large cells and one that delivers small cells (both with diameters of 500 µm). a. Determine the mass flow rate (in grams/second) and velocity (in cm/second) of cell culture media in each of the four channels. You may assume that your cells have the same density as the buffer (cell culture media) (aka you don't need to worry about cell types at all in this problem - don't overthink it). b. Fixed bed bioreactors typically have superficial velocities maintained between .75 and 2.5 cm/s to balance mass transfer and shear stress to the cells. Based on your calculations, will this bioreactor fall within an appropriate range? This problem is inspired by an article in: Lab Chip. 2015 Feb 16; 15(5): 1230 1249. Large cells (depicted in blue) migrate away from the small cells (depicted in red) in the initial streamline due to the engineered size and spacing of microposts in the microfluidic channel.
