It involves paying attention to the smallest details in plants and animals. For example, scientists wondered why a shark’s skin is always so clean. Other fish have bacteria on their skin. They found that the surface of a shark’s skin has a complex pattern that prevents bacteria from sticking. The scientists are using the sharkskin design to develop a new product. They want to make a material to cover the interior walls in hospitals. They hope it will prevent bacteria from spreading and making people sick. 3 Engineers also use nature’s designs. One engineer was working on a project to redesign a high-speed train to Japan. He was aware that the force of air around the train was slowing it down. He wanted to find a way to reduce this force so that the train could move faster. He got an idea for a new design from a bird–the kingfisher. The shape of the kingfisher’s head allows it to dive into the water without a splash. In other words, the shape reduces the force of the water. The engineer thought he could use the shape to reduce the force of air against the train. So, he designed the front of the train in the shape of the kingfisher’s head. This allowed it to move quickly and smoothly, just like a bird dives into the water. 4 Scientists and engineers acknowledge that it will be a long time before some of these ideas are used in everyday objects. Nature’s designs are incredibly complex, but they say that the gap between them and human engineering is closing. They have already achieved success in some areas.
