PASSAGE #3  Reаd the pаssаge and answer the questiоns that fоllоw. In the 1980s, a long-running TV public service advertisement showed a father con- fronting his son with what is obviously the boy’s drug paraphernalia. The father asks his son incredulously, “Where did you learn to do this?” The son, half in tears, replies, “From you, okay? I learned it from watching you!” Observational learning, which results simply from watching others, clearly appears to be a factor in an adolescent’s willingness to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Andrews and her colleagues found that adolescents’ relationships with their parents influence whether they will model the substance use patterns of the parents. Specifically, they found that adolescents who had a positive relationship with their mothers modeled her use (or nonuse) of cigarettes, and those who had a close relationship with their fathers modeled the father’s marijuana use (or nonuse). Similarly, those who had a negative relationship with their parents were less likely to model their parents’ use of drugs or alcohol. Although some of the more complex results of this study depended on the age and sex of the adolescent, the general findings can be understood by thinking about them from the three levels of analysis and their interactions. At the level of the brain, observing someone engage in a behavior causes you to store new memories, which involves the hippocampus and related brain systems. These memories later can guide behavior, as they do in all types of imitation. At the level of the person, if you are motivated to observe someone, you are likely to be paying more attention to him or her and, therefore, increasing the likelihood of your learning from them and remembering what you learn. At the level of the group, you are more likely to be captivated by models who have certain attractive characteristics. In this case, adolescents who had a positive relationship with their parents were more likely to do what their parents did; if their parents didn’t smoke, the adolescents were less likely to do so. The events at these levels interact. Children who enjoy a positive relationship with their parents may agree with their parents’ higher status than do children who have a negative relationship with their parents. Thus, the former group of children probably increases the amount of attention they give to their parents; behavior. (Adapted from Stephen M. Kosslyn and Robin S. Rosenberg, Psychology, 2nd ed., Boston: Allyn and Bacon, 2004.) 7. Which of the following sentences is the best statement of the main idea of the entire passage?
