Eumetаzоа: Animаls with True TissuesThe Eumetazоa cоntains animals with distinct tissues. The embryonic cell layers differentiate into the tissues of the adult body, giving rise to the body plan characteristic of each group of animals.Phyla Ctenophora: Comb JelliesThe comb jellies use cilia for movement. Ctenophora (comb jellies) is a small phylum of medusa-like animals that propel themselves with bands of fused cilia. They may be triploblastic. They capture prey with colloblasts, cells that release an adhesive.Phyla CnidarianAll cnidarians are carnivores. The carnivorous and radially symmetrical Cnidaria members have distinct tissues but no organs. They are diploblastic and have two body forms: a sessile, cylindrical polyp, and a free-floating medusa. Cnidarians are distinguished by capsules called nematocysts that are used in offense and defense. Cnidarians have no circulatory, excretory, or respiratory systems. They have a latticework of nerve cells and are sensitive to touch; some have gravity receptors and light receptors. Cnidarians are grouped into five classes. The five classes of Cnidaria are the Anthozoa (sea anemones, corals, sea fans); Cubozoa (box jellies); Hydrozoa (hydroids, Hydra), Scyphozoa (jellyfish); and Staurozoa (star jellies). The Staurozoa class is not accepted by all scientists.
Animаl Phylоgeny The Chоаnоflаgellate protists are a sister group to the animal phylogeny. The most evolutionary ancient animal phyla and the first to branch off the tree is the Porifera. The next phyla to branch off are the Ctenophora, Placozoa, and Cnidaria. All remaining taxa on the animal phylogeny are categorized as bilateria, and the first to branch off is an Acoelomorpha group called the Acoela. All remaining taxa have a coelom, and the tree splits with one side composing the protostomes and the other the deuterostomes. On the protostome side, there is a split with the Lophotrochozoa exhibiting spiral cleavage on one side and the Ecdysozoa exhibiting molting on the other. A branch of the Lophotrochozoa contains the phyla Brachiopoda, Bryozoan, Annelida, Mollusca, and Nemertea, all as terminal taxa with unresolved evolutionary relationships. The other branch of lophotrochozoa contains only Aceolomates. The acoelomate lophotrochozoa split with a secondary split on one side containing the Micrognathozoa and Rotifera as terminal taxa, and the side containing the Cycliophora and Platyhelminthes whose evolutionary relationship is yet unresolved. The first split in the ecdysozoa has a second branch with the pseudocoelomate Loricifera and the Kinorhyncha as terminal taxa. The other half of the ecdysozoa contains the terminal phyla the Nematoda and a second branch with 3 terminal taxa, the Tardigrada, Arthropoda, and Onychophora, whose evolutionary relationships are yet unresolved. The branch with deuterostomes that exhibit radial cleavage contains one split and 2 terminal phyla, the Echinodermata and the Chordata.
