A dryer is cоnstructed in the fоrm оf а long semicylindricаl duct with а diameter of 2 meters. The flat base of the dryer is occupied by water-soaked materials that need to be dried, while the curved dome serves as the heat source. The dome is maintained at a uniform temperature of 500°C, and the surface of the material at the base remains at 40°C. For this analysis, both surfaces may be assumed to behave as ideal blackbodies. The latent heat of vaporization for water is hfg = 2407 kJ/kg. (a) Determine the view factors F12 and F21 between the dome and the base of the semicylindrical duct. (b) Calculate the required length of the dryer needed to dry the materials at a steady rate of 0.1 kg/s. Hint: The thermal energy required for evaporation (evaporation rate times hfg) is gained from the radiation from the dome. (c) If both the dome and the base surfaces have an emissivity of 0.6 (not blackbodies anymore), draw the thermal resistance network for radiation heat transfer between the two surfaces. Clearly label all resistances in your diagram and compute the values of each resistance. (d) Using the resistance network developed in part (c), calculate the net rate of radiative heat transfer exchanged between the dome and the base of the dryer.
