Reаd the pаssаge and answer the Questiоn: Ray is a cоwbоy who worked for over 50 years in Montana as ranch hand, first literally riding the range on horseback and now in a pickup. He’s had some trouble with his vision lately. The problem came to a head when he went to renew his driver’s license. The clerk behind the counter said Ray would have to wait until he could read the eye chart with both eyes. As it turned out, his right eye was so clouded he could make out only half the letters. Ray knew his vision wasn’t so good, but being denied the driver’s license was the last straw. He made an appointment to see an eye doctor. Typically cataracts form after the age of 60; however, the age of incidences is dropping. Although age-related cataracts are most common, they can develop for other reasons and even early in life. A number of conditions are associated with, or contribute to, the formation of a cataract, such as: Age-related or senile cataract; most likely due to ultraviolet (UV) light exposure and oxidative damage. Congenital cataract (present at birth); developmental abnormality; or intrauterine infection such as rubella. Secondary to, or associated with, a coexisting medical condition or medication such as diabetes, use of corticosteroids, low serum calcium, hypertension, and hypothyroidism. Traumatic, either blunt or penetrating injury to the eye. Studies indicate that a senile or age-related cataract like the one Ray has is associated with duration and intensity of UV light exposure. One bit of evidence supporting this view is the fact that airline pilots have a threefold increase in the incidence of cataracts as compared to people with non-flying jobs. (Scientists are concerned that the thinning of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere has resulted in more UV light penetration to the earth’s surface, and this may result in a greater overall incidence of cataracts.) Family history can also plays a role, although the mechanism is not clear. It may well be that this apparent familial association is actually environmental. After all, people in the same family often live in the same area and may end up in similar lines of work. Question: What is formation of cataract not associated with?
