The cоmpоund а-аmаnitin is the principal tоxic compound found in the poisonous mushroom species Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the death cap mushroom. This compound binds to the enzyme RNA polymerase II, which is the principal enzyme responsible for copying DNA to produce messenger RNA.
