Text B - The Spаre Key Originаl shоrt stоry. [1] Three dаys befоre the school art show, Nia kept the supply cabinet key on a cord around her wrist. She had promised to finish a large paper mural with her class. Last year, a paint spill had ruined part of their display. This year, she checked every brush herself. When Owen asked to set out the paints, she said, “I’ll do it. You can sort the paper.” [2] By Tuesday, the mural still had a wide blank strip. Nia spent each work session handing out supplies and cleaning up. Owen waited beside the locked cabinet while she fixed a torn edge. “We could get more done if two people could open it,” he said. Nia shook her head. “And if something goes wrong, who has to explain it?” Owen went back to cutting paper. [3] On Wednesday, Nia had to leave school early for an appointment. She took the key with her by habit. When she returned the next morning, the blank strip was still blank. A note from Owen lay on the table: “We had time. We didn’t have paint.” The art show would open that evening. [4] Nia stared at the note. Her plan had kept the paint safe, but it had also kept everyone from using it. She found Owen in the hall. “Can you help me set up a way for everyone to get supplies?” she asked. He walked back with her. “A sign-out sheet would help us know where things are,” he said. “Then we wouldn’t have to guess.” [5] With their teacher’s permission, they put the cabinet’s spare key at the class work desk. Nia showed two classmates how to close the paint lids. Owen made the sign-out sheet. For the first time that week, Nia sat beside the others and worked on the mural. When a small smear crossed a paper leaf, she reached for the brush, then stopped. “What could we make from that?” she asked. A classmate turned it into a shadow. [6] Just before the show, Owen checked the cabinet. Every paint jar was back. One corner of the mural was still uneven, but the blank strip now held a line of trees made by six different people. Nia hung the sign-out sheet beside the cabinet for their next project. Then she joined her classmates beneath the mural as the first visitors arrived.
