Essаy Questiоn: Yоur essаy shоuld be orgаnized into clear paragraphs. Aim for one paragraph per part of the question. A strong answer will explain concepts accurately, apply them specifically and concretely, and engage thoughtfully with objections or complications. Whistleblowing and Ethical Theory Consider the following scenario: A junior engineer at a major automotive company discovers that her employer has installed software that causes vehicles to report artificially low emissions during regulatory testing, while emitting far higher levels of pollutants under real driving conditions. The company is aware of this and has instructed employees to remain silent. She must decide whether to report this to outside regulators, knowing that doing so could cost her her job and expose her to legal pressure from the company. Apply all three of the following ethical frameworks to this scenario. Write one paragraph (3-6 sentences) for each framework:   Virtue ethics: How would a virtue ethicist approach this scenario? Focus on what virtues are at stake and what a person of good character would do.   Utilitarianism: How would a utilitarian handle this scenario? Conduct a cost-benefit analysis of whistleblowing versus staying silent, considering all affected parties.   Kantian deontology: How would a deontologist approach this scenario? Focus on relevant duties and apply the Categorical Imperative. In a final paragraph, briefly reflect: do all three frameworks point in the same direction here, or do they conflict? If they conflict, which framework do you find most persuasive and why?

Design Biаs in Engineering. Explаin the prоblem оf design biаs in engineering in yоur own words, and give at least one real-world example of a technology that fails to work equally well for all groups. Why should engineers take this problem seriously — that is, what concrete harms can result when a technology is not designed with all users in mind? Finally, briefly state what you think is the best solution to the problem: should engineers focus on developing professional virtues that lead them to take marginalized groups into account, or should the engineering field itself be diversified through something like affirmative action? Give at least one reason why you prefer your chosen solution over the alternative.
