When teaching algebraic concepts to students, it is important to help them link various representations. Consider the series of arrays shown here. When determining the number of dots in a particular array, two students had two different answers: (D = the number of dots and A = the array number.) Student A said D = 3A + 4. Student B said D = 3(A + 2) – 2. Make two drawings of the fifth array in the sequence and show/mark how each student might have looked at the array in order to derive his or her equation.
