Essay Questions Choose 1 (one) of the following questions.  Please answer the questions thoroughly and develop your ideas so you provide a comprehensive answer.  Please use complete sentences, correct structure and grammar. In your own words, please answer the question – what is adolescence? Explain essentially what occurs during this stage of life.  How has it evolved over time?  What were the specific factors that led to adolescence as we know it in the United States. Based on what you have learned thus far, how would you explain it to parents whose children are about to enter this stage?  Please provide specific examples Describe an experiment you think would be useful to conduct with adolescents and explain why this would be important. Present the theory on which you are basing this experiment and the hypothesis you are testing.  Please include at least two groups of participants that you need to label as experimental and control and describe your rationale in why you chose this distinction.  You must also identify the dependent and independent variables as well as the operational definitions you may need.  Please be thorough in discussing your experimental research example. List, describe and provide examples of the five manifestations of puberty. Also, since hormones are the driving force behind the physical changes, include in your answer the three different and specific ways hormonal changes lead to behavioral changes (please refer to Slide 62 for Chapter 2).  As you explain these situations, be sure to provide specific examples to clarify your answer.  There is great variability in the onset of puberty for individuals- is this significant? Why or why not?  What does it mean to when a teen experiences extremely early or extremely late onset of puberty. List and describe the characteristics associated with these extremes (early and late).  Is this effect the same for boys and girls?   Why or why not?  Make sure to provide specific examples to illustrate the implications of what it means to experience very early and very late development in puberty.  Regarding brain/cognitive development what does the statement “…starting the engines with an unskilled driver…” mean? Be sure to describe the role of the limbic system and prefrontal cortex in your answer.  What are some of the practical implications of this stage of development?  How do peers play a role in this?  Be sure to provide examples and any relevant research to explain and support your answer. Please include references to   Sarah – Jayne Blakemore’s TedTalk to supplement your answer As we learned in chapter 3, as adolescents go through puberty, not only do they have physical changes, their thinking changes as well. David Elkind (1979) proposes adolescents think “in a new key”.  In particular he proposed that these manifest in being argumentative, having an imaginary audience, a personal as well as in invincibility fable.  Please explain what he means by these and explain what cognitive changes are contributing to these phenomena.  Please remember to include specific examples as part of your answer.
