Step 1: Review the Essay TopicFor this essay, you will analyze how the speaker you recorded uses strategies, such as ethos, pathos, logos, storytelling, tone, word choice, and cultural references, to connect with the audience and achieve his or her purpose. You’ll explain how these strategies work together to persuade or engage the audience, and evaluate how effectively they help the speaker achieve their purpose. Note: If you do not have a recording yet, you can use this interview of the singer Adele for now, but you can only use it for the prewriting test. You cannot use that video for the essay or upcoming assignments. You will address the following question: How does the speaker you recorded use one to four of the strategies mentioned above to persuade or connect with the audience, and how effective are these strategies in achieving the speaker’s purpose? Step 2: Listen to your recording. Take the time to listen closely to it at least once, and consider the topic as you listen to it. Step 3: Start Writing or Creating an Outline in the Area BelowIf you’re not sure how to begin, you may use the following optional questions to guide your writing or outline. You do not need to answer all of them. Just use what helps. Write at least 400 words. This is not a full essay, but your response should include specific ideas, examples, and references to the speaker and their performance. Do not summarize the recording or explain everything that happens. What is the goal or message of the speaker’s recording? What does the speaker want the audience to think, feel, or do? Who is the intended audience, and how can you tell? How do the speaker’s strategies seem tailored to that group? What rhetorical strategies stand out, such as ethos (the speaker’s credibility), logos (logic), and pathos (emotions)? What word choices, repetition, or cultural references stand out? How do they connect with the audience? Is there a specific moment that felt powerful, emotional, or persuasive? What strategies are used in that moment? How do the speaker’s stories, jokes, personal experiences, etc., help build trust or connect emotionally with the audience? (Optional) Step 4: Review the Rubric Before Submitting Your Test Rubric for the Prewriting Tests (25 Points Total) Score Description 25 – Clearly Developed and Insightful You shared thoughtful, specific ideas and fully responded to the prompt. Your response meets the word goal of about 400 words and shows that you carefully considered the topic. 20 – Thoughtful and On Track You responded to most parts of the prompt and shared clear, relevant ideas. Your response is close to 400 words. Some parts could be a little more detailed or organized, but this shows a solid understanding and effort. 15 – A Good Start with Room to Grow You addressed the main idea. Your response may be short, and some ideas may be general or need more development. Still, you’re on the right track. Keep going! 10 – Needs More Development Your response is way under the word count or misses important parts of the prompt. It may be too general, or the strategies aren’t clearly explained. Try to be more specific and take time to develop your thoughts. If you need help, let me know. 5 and below – Incomplete or Off Track The response is too brief or off-topic to meet the goals of the assignment. Next time, focus on connecting your ideas to the visual. Let’s build on this next time. If you need help, let me know. When you are ready to write, start writing your essay in the area below.
