[BLANK-1] was an American Army General who evacuated the Philippines, vowing to return, before its early fall to the Japanese. He was critical of Chester M. Nimitz’s Island-Hopping Strategy in the Pacific and argued that many individual islands could be skipped over and offered no real strategic value. He oversaw the surrender of the Japanese at the war’s end and served as the de facto governor of Japan in the early stages of the peace process. Later, during the Korean War, he would be fired for insubordination when he publicly criticized President Harry S. Truman.

[BLANK-1] was the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied southern France. It occurred in summer, 1944, a few months after D-Day and was designed to link up with the D-Day forces from Normandy.

While historians conclude that Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidency was an overwhelming success (he’s generally placed alongside Lincoln and Washington as the greatest American presidents), he had a less-than-stellar record in regard to civil rights, particularly for African Americans. Part of FDR’s poor civil rights record can be owed to [BLANK-1]. Roosevelt built a coalition which included democrats from this agrarian region where racism was high. He concluded that for any of his programs to be approved, he must avoid alienating these voters, so he largely ignored controversial civil rights issues.

Herbert Hoover generally avoided direct federal aid to combat the Great Depression; however, late in his term, in 1932, he created the [BLANK-1]. This was designed to stimulate the American economy by providing emergency loans to banks, savings-and-loans, railroads, and private businesses. It did provide some benefits, but it was too little, too late. It also provided aid for capitalists and entrepreneurs while ignoring the needs of the downtrodden. New York City’s mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia complained that it was a “millionaire’s dole.”

The most significant theater of war during World War II was the Eastern Front. There, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union engaged in a bitter conflict that cost the lives of millions. The turning point of the war came on the Eastern Front during [BLANK-1] from August 1942-February 1943. This was the decisive conflict of the war. Soviet general Georgy Zhukov led the Allies to victory with the complete destruction of the German 6th Army. The Germans suffered 850,000 casualties and never fully recovered.

African Americans were not the only racial group who were segregated from whites during the first half of the twentieth century. Hispanics, too, were barred from all-white schools. However, an advocacy group for Hispanics called [BLANK-1] won a landmark decision to desegregate schools in California in 1946, nearly a decade before schools were legally desegregated.
