Problem #3 on your calculation sheet. The Marine Life Institute has developed a media campaign designed to decrease the amount of trash pollution in the local harbors. Before the campaign began, researchers measured the amount of pollution (in pounds) pulled from each of the local harbors. After the campaign was over, they returned to the same harbors and measured the amount of pollution (in pounds) left in the harbors. The third data set on your calculation sheet (problem #3) shows how much pollution were present both before and after the media campaign. Column “Pre” shows the amount of pollution before the campaign and Column “Post” shows the amount of pollution after the campaign. We would like to know if the campaign made a difference in the amount of pollution the people caused in the harbors. What is the independent (or quasi-independent) variable in this study?

Problem #2 on your calculation sheet. How would you explain the results of this hypothesis test to a non-statistician? Explain any conclusions about the differences observed, or the lack thereof. If there was a statistically significant difference, be specific about the direction of the difference (i.e. which group had more or less of the outcome of interest). You do not need to include your APA statistical values, just explain the results in sentence format.

The foundation wants to determine whether the contributions they have received so far are significantly different from their goal of $20.00. What value(s) does the null hypothesis predict for the mean?

You are interested in determining whether the grades of current high school students in Grand Forks are different than the grades of past students. The state board of education is able to tell you that the mean GPA for students graduating in Grand Forks in the past 40 years is 2.82, but that is all the information they have. You randomly select 90 students who are about to graduate and compute their mean GPA. Which statistical test will tell you if there is a difference in GPA between the current students and students from the past 40 years?
