Build аnd defend yоur аrgument The usuаl Argument frоm Principle uses a mоral standard as Premise 1 (P1), case facts as Premise 2 (P2), and a judgment as the Conclusion (C). A premise is a reason offered to support a conclusion. You may use another valid premise-and-conclusion form when it fits your reasoning better. Use these same boxes, label your premises and conclusion, and explain their connection. 2. Framework concepts and P1 Choose your main framework. Explain its relevant concepts in your own words. Write P1 and explain how it follows from your framework. For Argument from Principle, P1 is a general moral standard that applies beyond this case; keep the characters' names for P2. Read the help for your choice. You can also use this help for your second framework in Box 6. Aristotle's virtue ethics: A virtue is a stable way of feeling, choosing, and acting well. Practical wisdom judges which action fits the circumstances. Flourishing means living well through worthwhile activity and relationships across a life. A v-rule is a rule drawn from a virtue, such as courage or justice. Explain the virtue your standard calls for. Kantian deontology: Duty is a moral requirement. A maxim is the person's plan: “When ___, I will ___ in order to ___.” Write the maxim you will test. P1 states the moral test. Universal Law asks whether we could consistently will everyone to act on that maxim. Humanity requires treating people as ends, never merely as means, with respect for their ability to understand and choose. Utilitarianism: Well-being concerns how people's lives go. Impartiality gives each person's well-being equal consideration. Choose act or rule. Act utilitarianism compares available actions by their expected overall well-being. Rule utilitarianism judges actions by a moral code, a set of rules whose general acceptance would produce the greatest overall well-being. Act and rule count as one framework. Optional P1 start: “People should ___ when ___” or “An action is wrong if ___.”
