At its core, it is an individual expression of personal emotion. Critics tend to define the aesthetic of modern poetry as impersonal, hard, and cold. How do the modern poems of H.D. challenge this idea? How does she reincarnate the Sapphic tradition? How do her poems combine Sapphic allusions with modern poetic innovations to produce a verse replete with modern expressions of gender and sexual difference? 4 . In “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain” (1926), Langston Hughes describes the importance of jazz music as an expression of the depth and breadth of emotions characterizing the African-American experience: “But jazz to me is one of the inherent expressions of Negro life in America; the eternal tom-tom beating in the Negro soul—the tom-tom of revolt against weariness in a white world, a world of subway trains, and work, work, work; the tom-tom of joy and laughter, and pain swallowed in a smile.” In this seminal essay, Hughes argues that blues and jazz offer the African American artist a model of “individuality in the face of American standardization” (965). How does Hughes incorporate blues and jazz as a means to express the African American experience? In what sense do Hughes’s innovations with blues and jazz work to confront social inequities, resist assimilation, celebrate African American cultural legacies, and promote social solidarity?
