Questions

Cоpper spheres must be thermаlly treаted tо аchieve desired mechanical and thermal prоperties (kCu = 400 W/m K, rCu = 8960 kg/m3, and cCu = 385 J/kg K); however, furnace environments are highly corrosive, and copper is quite expensive! We propose to coat 10 cm-diameter copper spheres with a cheap ceramic coating (kc = 2.5 W/m K) so that the outer diameter of the composite sphere is 30 cm. The contact resistance between the copper sphere and the ceramic shell is estimated at 8 × 10-4 m2K/W. The heat transfer coefficient around the ceramic shell is h = 45 W/m2K and the ambient temperature is T¥ = 500 K. (a) As we did in class, identify the system and all external resistances to it. Calculate the resistances, the overall heat transfer coefficient, and determine if the LCM is applicable. (b) If the LCM is applicable, perform an energy balance around the copper sphere and derive a differential equation capable of describing the temperature of the sphere as a function of time. (c) Solve the equation from part (b) assuming the copper sphere was initially at 293 K. (d) Calculate the time required for the sphere to reach 490K.
