Length: 150-200 wоrds eаch NOTE: The beginning оf the secоnd body pаrаgraph is your topic sentence (P from PIETIE: See below). That sentence needs transitional wording, as well. (Also, additionally, furthermore, another reason...)  Use PIETIE: Point, Illustrate, Explain, Transition, Illustrate, Explain P is for POINT: The topic sentence should be your first sentence. State the first reason for the reaction in the topic sentence. This sentence must correlate to the first reason in your thesis sentence. I is for ILLUSTRATE: Integrate a quotation from the essay to support your point from the topic sentence. Before incorporating the first quotation from the text, provide all necessary context for the information in the quote. Context is necessary because you should assume that most of the readers in your audience have never read King’s or Douglass’s essay. Any information in the quote that you haven’t provided background information about (e.g. who a pronoun refers to, who or what idea the author is addressing) Include an MLA in-text citation after any source (quoted, paraphrased, summarized) material to avoid plagiarism. In-text citations should include only the page number in parentheses because this essay uses only one source and its author is established early in the introduction. E is for Explain: After the quote and in-text citation, EXPLAIN why and how this evidence supports the point in the topic sentence reaction. For example, how does it affect readers’ experience of his point or his overall argument? What point is he making, and how does the example from the quote help viewers understand it? T is for TRANSITION to the next quote you’re using. Use effective transitional words or phrases [Also, additionally, another reason…, etc.]. Repeat the process for I and E. Make sure that the last sentence of each body paragraph links back to the reason for the one-word reaction from the topic sentence. How does this point affect readers’ experience of the text in a way that is [one-word or one-phrase reaction]?
