Your essay should have an intro, a body, and a conclusion. Provide at least a few specific examples! Also, this might sound obvious . . . but please try to make your response look like an essay: there should be at least a few paragraphs, and the first line of each new paragraph should be indented about five spaces to the right, for example. Also, please do NOT repeat what you've already tackled in either the first essay or the research essay for our class; in this portion of the exam, please do something new, a new topic on a brand-new story.a) Write a fully developed essay in which you identify and explain the good and the bad about Abner Snopes. The insightful reader knows that Faulkner has created a rather complex character in Abner. Let your essay show that complexity. You are free to come to some “looser” conclusion about Abner ("He is mostly bad," for example, or "He is misunderstood"). However, you are not required to come to a tidy conclusion about him.b) I (Mr. Wilson) might be stretching things here, and if so . . . just ignore this option and move on to the next . . .Write a comparison/contrast-type of essay that deals with “St. Lucy’s . . .” on the one hand and “Barn Burning” on the other. Specifically, write an essay that looks at the theme of blood-loyalty in both stories. “St. Lucy’s . . .” seems to favor blood-loyalty (?); there seems in other words to be some ethic running beneath “St. Lucy’s . . .” that agrees, at least in part, that blood should be thicker than water. And while “Barn Burning” does not argue that blood-loyalty is, in itself, necessarily bad at all, the blood-loyalty that Abner demands is indeed suspect (to say the least). Anyway, again, compare and contrast “St. Lucy’s . . .” and “Barn Burning,” paying special attention to the ways in which both stories present the theme of blood-loyalty (or, if you prefer, loyalty or faithfulness to one’s native background). In your analysis, try not to ignore the endings of both stories. Does one story end more happily than another, for example? If so, explain (with details). (This could be a really great essay.)c) Argue that Junot Diaz’s Lola is both not her mother’s daughter and, at the same time, very much her mother’s daughter. In other words, explain the ways in which Lola distances herself from her bloodline and the ways in which, despite her growing independence, she continues to be powerfully connected to her family and her culture. d) Write an essay that focuses on the issue of duty (whether it’s duty to one’s country, duty to one’s family, duty to one’s own conscience, etc.); your essay should explore duty in both “Barn Burning” and “Killings.” e) In your essay, argue that Grete Samsa (Gregor’s sister), from Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis,” undergoes a “metamorphosis” that is actually more stunning, more significant, and more complete than that which Gregor experiences. Be prepared to prove your point(s) with examples from the text. Maybe the thesis of your essay could be that the story’s title actually refers not to Gregor but to the other Samsas, especially Grete. It might be wise to have two halves here: in the first half you’d perhaps explain how/why Gregor doesn’t really change in any fundamental way, and in the second you could illustrate how/why his sister does undergo a radical shift.f) Argue that "Sonny's Blues" is basically the picture of two reconciliations: a) a reconciliation between two brothers, and b) a reconciliation between two "halves" of the same self (i.e., the narrator’s former self and, of course, his newer, more flexible personality, which seems to emerge in the story’s remarkable final pages).
