It wоuld be impоssible tо cover аll of the аrchitecture of the Ancient Neаr East, even if we spent the entire semester trying. This week, I would like you to find an example of Ancient Near Eastern architecture that we did not see in class and compare it to one that we did. Step 1: choose a building from the Ancient Near East that we did not see in class. Step 2: identify the structure by name, architect (if known), date, and location. Step 3: Conduct some research on the building. What was its function? How was it built? What material were used? Is the building characteristic of the time and place in which it was built, or does it represent a departure from earlier styles or techniques? Step 4: Compare your building to one we saw in class. Choosing your example: You don't have to do formal scholarly research for this assignment, but you should make sure that you are getting information from a reputable source. Some suggestions: SmartHistory is always a good bet. It's the Khan Academy Art History site. In Blackboard, I have posted PDFs of several Architectural History textbooks. Look at the chapters on the Ancient Near East. Museum Websites are always good. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a great source. There are a ton of museums with great resources online. Just make sure that what you are looking at is actually a real museum website. UNESCO has tons of information about all of its World Heritage Sites. Search "Ancient Near East" or get more specific "Ancient Sumerian," etc. World History Encyclopedia and other online encyclopedias are fine. In general, as I'm sure you know, .edu and .gov sites are usually legitimate. Include the links to every site you use to research your example. Comparing and Contrasting: Write an essay (250-500 words) comparing and contrasting the building you chose to one from class. As you've seen, we love to compare and contrast in Architectural History. Finding similarities and differences between two buildings can reveal larger similarities and differences among cultures, time periods, traditions, etc. What can exploring similarities and differences tell us? If your building is very similar to one we saw in class, ask yourself how it is different. Alternately, if you choose a building that seems to be very different than anything we saw in class, you might find some interesting reasons for these differences, as well as hidden similarities to things you have already seen.
