Questions

I mentiоned in clаss аnd in the lecture videоs thаt there were critical geоgraphic factors explaining why, historically and presently, the Middle East has been politically unstable and unable to effectively defend itself from outside interests. All of the following EXCEPT ONE are reasons this is so for most all of known history and today. Name that one that is NOT a historical reason.

Shоrt Answer As pаrt оf yоur exаm there аre 3 short answer questions worth 10 points each that need to be answered. Five short answer questions are presented below, and each student should select (only) 3 to answer in completion. Please read through each of the 5 short answer question options and pick the 3 you feel you can answer most completely. Keep in mind that you will only be graded on 3 of the questions and answering all 5 questions will not provide extra points. Even if you answer additional questions, only the first 3 will be graded.  Requirements: Select 3 of the 5 following questions. Each response must be 6–8 complete sentences. Your answer should: address all parts of the question, include sociological concepts, definitions and provide specific real-world examples to support your answers. Short Answer Question Options __________________________ Option 1: The Intersectionality of Labor Identify a specific modern industry (e.g., the "Gig Economy," Healthcare, or Fast Food). Apply the sociological imagination to explain how an individual’s struggle with underemployment in that industry is actually a byproduct of two intersecting social structures (e.g., how gendered expectations intersect with educational debt). You must name the industry and the two specific structures in your response. ______________________________________ Option 2: Challenging the "Common Sense" Narrative Identify a common "non-sociological" explanation for crime (e.g., "it’s a lack of individual discipline"). Contrast this explicitly with a sociological imagination analysis. How does shifting the focus from "individual character" to "structural inequality" change the way a city might choose to fund its social services? Provide a specific example of a structural change that could reduce crime. __________________________________ Option 3: Theoretical Comparison in Action Choose one current social problem (e.g., rising housing costs or food insecurity). Contrast how a Conflict Theorist and a Symbolic Interactionist would explain the root cause of this issue. Your answer must include how their "level of analysis" (macro vs. micro) leads them to propose two completely different solutions to the problem. ______________________________ Option 4: Substance Abuse & Social Geography Using either Social Disorganization Theory or Labeling Theory, explain why two individuals using the exact same substance might face different social and legal consequences based solely on their "social environment" (neighborhood, class, or race). You must use a specific sociological concept from your readings to explain why the environment dictates the "risk." __________________________ Option 5: Media, Gender, and Digital Evolution Analyze a specific modern media platform (e.g., TikTok, Instagram, or targeted streaming ads). Explain how the "algorithm" or user-generated content on that platform acts as an agent of gender socialization. Then, explain how this reinforcement of gender roles directly intersects with another social issue we studied this semester, such as Education or Family dynamics.
