It was Mongol practice that all important Mongols (including leaders of the army) had to return to the Mongol capital to participate in the election of the next Khan, upon the death of the ruling Khan. More than once, this practice saved territories that were on the verge of falling to the Mongol Empire. For example, in 1241, upon the news of the death of Ögödei Khan, the Mongol army retreated back to the capital, saving much of Europe from defeat at the hands of the Mongol Horde.
