Dоctоrаl Quаlifying Exаminatiоn Hannah Brady (U04945073) Fall 2026 Day 1 (Cognate in Psychology) Please read the following scenario and respond to each of the questions below it.  Jason is a 4-year, 4-month-old child who was referred for a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation by his preschool teacher due to concerns about delayed communication, limited peer interactions, repetitive play behaviors, and difficulty following classroom routines. Jason attended a private daycare beginning at age 2 years and currently attends a district-operated voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK) classroom four mornings per week. Jason lives with both parents and an older sister. English is the primary language spoken in the home. Pregnancy and birth history were unremarkable. His parents report that Jason was a "quiet baby" who rarely sought attention but has generally been healthy with no history of seizures, major illnesses, or hearing or vision concerns. Early developmental milestones were somewhat delayed. Jason walked independently at approximately 17 months, spoke his first meaningful words around 24 months, and currently communicates primarily using short three- to four-word phrases. His parents report gradual improvement in his language over the past year following speech-language therapy. Jason’s parents describe him as affectionate with immediate family members but shy around unfamiliar adults and children. He prefers to play alone at home and at the playground, and often chooses the same types of toys and activities each time he plays.  More recently, Jason has shown interest in playing alongside his sister and occasionally imitates her pretend play. He becomes upset when routines change unexpectedly and frustrated when others do not understand him. Jason's preschool teacher reports that he follows visual schedules well, transitions more successfully with advance warning, and often engages in parallel play rather than cooperative play. He demonstrates strong early academic skills, including identifying letters, numbers, colors, and shapes. Behaviorally, the teacher reports that Jason becomes distressed when classroom routines unexpectedly change and occasionally cries or covers his ears during loud assemblies. He also has difficulty attending during circle time and other group instruction, sometimes looking off or wandering to parts of the room. No aggression or self-injurious behaviors have been observed. The speech-language pathologist reports increasing use of spontaneous language, appropriate joint attention during preferred activities, and ability to request help appropriately. The multidisciplinary evaluation team has reviewed the available evaluation data and agrees that Jason demonstrates developmental and educational needs that warrant consideration for special education services. However, team members disagree regarding the most appropriate educational classification. One evaluator believes Jason's social communication differences, repetitive behaviors, sensory sensitivities, and restricted interests are most consistent with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) educational classification. Another evaluator believes Jason's overall developmental profile, improving language skills, average cognitive abilities, and age suggest that Developmental Delay (DD) is a more appropriate classification while additional developmental progress is monitored. Parents express concern about the long-term implications of an autism classification and are hopeful that Jason is “just developing at his own pace.” The district does not have clear guidelines to assist with making this type of classification decision. Therefore, the team has asked you as the school psychologist to facilitate further discussion and provide recommendations regarding Jason’s educational needs and the most appropriate classification. ----- Day #1 (Cognate in Psychology) ---- In your role as a School Psychologist specializing in early childhood in your district, you have the opportunity to guide the team in determining the best way to support Jason as he transitions from pre-kindergarten to kindergarten. Your responses today should demonstrate your understanding of the affective, biological, cognitive, developmental, and social aspects of behavior relevant to conceptualizing Jason’s current academic, social, emotional, and behavioral skills, and ultimately supporting Jason indirectly through consultation with school personnel and his parents. (A discussion of how to support Jason directly through clinical services is not expected in this Day 1 response, but rather will be addressed in Day 2 of qualifying exams). *Please cite empirical literature (author only, no date needed) to support your responses. Based on the case study presented and your knowledge of theories of affective aspects of behavior, describe emotional and behavioral factors that may contribute to Jason’s current social-emotional functioning and future adjustment to the kindergarten environment. Based on the case study presented and your knowledge of theories of biological aspects of behavior, describe neural, physiological, and/or genetic influences associated with Jason’s case that may contribute to his current academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Based on the case study presented and your knowledge of cognitive aspects of behavior, describe theories of learning, memory, thought processes and/or decision-making that may help explain Jason’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Based on the case study presented and your knowledge of developmental aspects of behavior, describe theories and concepts related to early childhood, transitions, autonomy, social-emotional growth, and development that may help explain Jason’s current challenges. Based on the case study presented and your knowledge of social aspects of behavior, describe theories and concepts related to social development, family systems, peer relationships, and environmental influences that may help to better understand Jason’s current social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Based on the case study, provide two examples of how Jason’s current academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges likely result from the interplay of multiple bases of behavior discussed in Questions 1-5 above (e.g., social concepts that are particularly salient to his developmental stage). Based on your responses to Questions 1-6 above, how would you consult with the multidisciplinary evaluation team and his parents regarding decision-making for services to best support Jason as he transitions to kindergarten?
