Taiwan’s status as a state has been a contentious one, since China (PRC) considers Taiwan to be an integral part of China. China has also declared that it will actively oppose measures by the international community to recognize Taiwan as an independent state. This has posed a problem for states in the international community who want to engage with Taiwan. In order to qualify for statehood, what conditions must Taiwan fulfill according to the Montevideo Convention of 1933?   2.If majority of states do not recognize Taiwan as an independent state, is it still entitled to statehood under international law?   3.Does Taiwan enjoy dejure or defacto status under international law?   4. This situation raises the following question regarding their status and rights under international law. 1. Can the UK, a signatory to the Refugee Convention (1951) turn away the Syrian family? Why? 2. Could the UK authorities have imprisoned or fined them for entering the country without a valid visa? 3. Which would be the best mode of acquiring UK/ British nationality for the Syrian family arriving from Syria in accordance with the laws of UK? Why? 4. Which  would be the best mode of acquiring British nationality for the child who was born in the UK in accordance with UK laws? Why? 5.
