Niece Nellie just gоt wоrd thаt her cоusin, Betty Sue, wаs аbout to deliver her 10th baby. Aunt Gladys, Uncle Ned and Nellie jumped into the truck to drive to the hospital but it wouldn’t start. Getting out of the truck Nellie bumped her elbow on the door. Uncle Ned sent Nellie out to the field to catch the mules. Rubbing her elbow as she ran Nellie wasn’t paying attention to where she was going and stepped in a groundhog hole which caused her to fall and scrape her knee and her chin and she jammed her thumb into a rock. Even though she was sore, Nellie was excited about seeing the new baby so she brushed herself off and ran off to find the mules. She had to run across several fields and worked up quite a sweat but they were soon on their way in the old hay wagon and Nellie started to cool down and rub her sore places. After they made their way over the mountain, they finally reached the next hollow where Betty Sue lived with her husband, Cletus, and her other nine children. Cletus greeted them at the cabin door and announced that Betty Sue had already delivered her new baby in record time and the midwife said she and the baby were doing fine. Betty Sue looked exhausted from her ordeal but had already started to cook lunch for everyone. She had planned ahead for the big event and had cooked up twelve of their plumpest chickens for all the friends and family. She took a big knife and divided all the chickens into equal left and right halves. While Betty Sue and Aunt Gladys were preparing lunch, Nellie helped the midwife look after the new baby, Thelma Maude. The midwife had tied a string around the cut cord and told Nellie that it would eventually become the belly button. She also took a drop of blood from Thelma’s heel to send off to the hospital to test for an enzyme deficiency called PKU. She rolled the baby onto its stomach to check over its hind parts and then rolled it once again onto its back. The midwife checked each of the baby’s arms and legs carefully by running her hand first from the shoulder all the way to the tiny fingers and then each leg starting at the hip and moving carefully down to its pink curled toes. She then listened carefully to Thelma’s heart and lungs with a stethoscope. She stood up and declared that Thelma Maude was fit as a fiddle. The mid-wife listened to baby Thelma’s heart and lungs.
