Using Oedipus Rex, Lysistrata, or La vida es sueño (Life is a Dream) compare and contrast at least two main characters from two separate plays and how their dramatic conflict depicts the individual defining themselves and their reality within society. How are they used by their respective playwrights to express the struggle of the individual? What can you determine from your chosen play as to the concept of the individual in the respective society they were first performed? Finally, would the individual characters you selected still be relevant (or relatable) to a contemporary audience of your peers? Aristotle named “Spectacle” as sixth in his hierarchy of the formal parts of Tragedy. Why did he place this element so low? Using either Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream or The Tempest, make an argument as to why “spectacle” should be considered a more important element in theatre today and where in the hierarchy would you place it? What specifically in Shakespeare’s plays leads you to believe that Shakespeare did not necessarily agree with Aristotle’s hierarchy?
